Pastor Ty's 2010 Pastor's Report
“State of the Charge” Pastor’s Report for First UMC Hillsville 2010
Submitted by Pastor Ty Harrison
OFFERING THEM CHRIST through the ministries of FUMC Hillsville is an exciting and never ending endeavor.
- First UMC Hillsville is OFFERING THEM CHRIST through the foundation of Bible preaching and teaching.
- I have been preaching from the lectionary for the most part, while Ronnie has continued preaching from the Gospel of Matthew.
- Our Bethel Bible Series has just entered its seventh year, having completed three two-year studies through the Bible. We are blessed to have Christine Eva and Carolyn Webb as the instructors. Both are certified instructors. Some students have enjoyed the course so much that they have returned and are taking it yet again. Wow!
- There are currently two UMW circles. There is also a Beth Moore Women’s Bible study led Kim Harrison on Thursday evenings.
- Our men’s Bible study Faith Lessons in the Promised Land is led by Jerry King.
- Wednesday evening adult Bible study continues working through the Gospel of John. This has been a very in-depth study.
- Dynamic worship services is yet another way in which FUMC, Hillsville is OFFERING THEM. We offer three services on Sunday, two morning services and an evening service.
- Currently we are offering three worship services on Sunday but at the turn of the year we will likely increase that by two more services;
1. Our Out of the Box Worship Center led by Pastor Ronnie Collins and
2. Spanish Speaking services led lay speaker Saul Heurta-Barba
- All of our worship services are growing in number and each are blessed with their own personality.
- Our new opportunities of sharing Jesus present numerous challenges that are causing us to reassess the effectiveness of current ministries. Reassessment will be a major consideration for us in the upcoming year.
- FUMC, Hillsville has been OFFERING THEM CHRIST for 153 years. One of the great celebrations we had this year was in celebration of 153 years as a congregation. Our District Superintendant, the Rev. Meg Taylor, blessed us with a message challenging us in our boldness to branch off into new ministry opportunities.
- Missions is one of the ministry areas that FUMC, Hillsville excels in as we are OFFERING THEM CHRIST:
Local missions includes community food pantry, Golden Harvest Thrift Store, Open Table, Camp Dickenson, Preschool ministry, Holston Home and Joy Ranch for Children, Benevolences and our motorcycling ministry.
National missions includes Flood Buckets, UMCOR, Society of Saint Andrews, Red Bird Mission, Inner City and Homeless of Atlanta, GA.
International missions includes Slovakia mission, UMCOR, Gideons, Darfur and Children of Sudan, and Samaritan’s Purse’s Operation Christmas Child.
- FUMC, Hillsville is OFFERING THEM CHRIST by caring. Our Family Ministry Plan is concluding its fourth full year. This ministry helps people within the congregation care for one another and help prevent people from “falling through the cracks.”
- FUMC, Hillsville is OFFERING THEM CHRIST through Children’s, Tweens’, Youth and Seniors Ministries that are attracting newcomers to Christ and His church.
The year 2010 is nearly behind us, while before awaits new opportunities. By the turn of the year or early 2011, FUMC Hillsville will pass the milestone of 500 members. I truly believe that 2011 has the potential of being the largest membership growth year in the church’s recent history. It will be a blessing to be part of it.
In the Service of Christ,
Ty Harrison
